Kiri was elected to Ballina Shire Council in 2021, representing Ward B.

She chose to represent the Greens because the party’s principles are synonymous with her own and provide a valuable framework for ethical and sustainable decision making in local government.    Kiri has spent most of her life living and working on Bundjalung Country in Nuthangali (Lennox Head) in coastal NSW. Since that time she has witnessed first hand the rapid pace of change as her tiny seaside village has grown into a thriving and ever-expanding town.

Before returning to her hometown as an adult, Kiri spent two decades living and working in the Pacific region as a gender specialist on aid and development projects. It was here that she became aware of the devastating social and environmental impact of climate change on small island development states.

Kiri was motivated to stand for Council after watching the impact of unsustainable development on the environment and social fabric of her community. Among her concerns are loss of biodiversity and native vegetation, and the housing crisis gripping her region.

Since being elected she has introduced motions that have banned balloons at events on public land, offering greater protection to seabirds and turtles, fought to preserve local heritage, addressed aircraft noise and opposed unsustainable development on threatened species habitat.
