Blacktown area residents ask Blacktown City Council to step up its investment in creating Greener, Shadier Suburbs: shade for our kids, seniors and the broader community including shade sails, tree canopies and more–and more effective–bus stop shelters.

Climate change is making our summers hotter and more unbearable in Western Sydney. Days that are hotter than 40, and even 45, degrees are becoming more frequent, and temperatures are continuously smashing previous records. We do not have adequate facilities and infrastructure to protect us from these hazardous conditions–even children’s playgrounds become danger zones in summer heatwaves. Blacktown Council needs a plan for Greener, Shadier Suburbs.

We are demanding that the council step up and implement a strategy to deal with this issue. This includes:
Increase in green cover across the local government area;
Cooling kids’ playgrounds down, investing in shade sails and drinking water fountains;
Better bus stop design that provides more protection, reduces temperature and allows for breeze;
More bus stop shelters;
Smarter building standards that decrease the heat indoors.

Will you sign our petition and urge the Council to invest in a cooler Blacktown?

Dear Blacktown City Mayor and Councillors,

We are living in a time of unbearable summer heat that is producing dangerous conditions for our children, seniors and the whole community. Climate change is here and is impacting both our environment and the quality of our lives. We ask that you step up Council’s investment in the infrastructure, facilities and strategy needed to create Greener, Shadier Suburbs.

Specifically, we urge you to deepen and intensify your commitment to delivering:
— Increase in green cover across the local government area;
— Cooling kids’ playgrounds down, investing in shade sails and drinking water fountains;
— Better bus stop design that provides more protection, reduces temperature and allows for — breeze;
— More bus stop shelters;
— Smarter building standards that decrease the heat indoors.

Yours for a safer and more livable community,
