Clare Willington

Candidate for Randwick Council - North Ward

Hi, I'm Clare Willington, Greens candidate for Randwick City Council, North Ward. I acknowledge that Randwick sits on the unceded land of the Bidjigal and Gadigal people; I respect their ongoing culture and heritage and I support council's work towards Reconciliation.

I worked as a GP in Canberra and a primary health care policy adviser for ACT government. Since retiring from medical practice, I trained to teach English to speakers of other languages and became a WIRES volunteer. I am committed to the health and wellbeing of people, wildlife and the environment. If elected, I am determined to be a strong voice on council working hard to preserve and protect the natural and cultural heritage of this special coastal area.
The most significant issue facing us is climate change. The enormity of the crisis we face is a challenge that can feel overwhelming at times, but there is much to be done at a local government level. Now more than ever before we must “think global and act local!”
I will be a strong voice on council for: The development and delivery of a resilience framework and action plan for Randwick; Cooling our suburbs by increasing the tree canopy cover of Randwick to at least 40%; Community planting of nature strips, gardens, balconies, rooftops and pocket parks to increase biodiversity and provide habitat corridors for native animals Reducing urban heat and improving health through all measures possible in accordance with NSW Government publication, Biodiversity In Place 2024; Increasing solar panel installation and battery storage through initiatives such as Solar my School and Solar my Community; and Electrifying everything in Randwick, especially where council has control over its operations and infrastructure, to became Carbon Neutral by 2030.
Two areas of interest to North Ward residents are Burrows Park and Fred Hollows Reserve. I will work to ensure that Burrows Park on the northern side of Clovelly Bay retains its wonderful coastal character. Improvements to the sporting facilities should be achieved without major earthworks, loss of wildlife habitat or changes to the off lead dog park. Fred Hollows Reserve is in need of maintenance, increased bush care and signage renewal; I will advocate for more resources for this special part of our environment.
Vote Green for a cleaner, cooler, healthier and more liveable Randwick!
