Delta Kay

Candidate for Byron Shire Council

Jingi Walla! I'm Delta Kay, a proud Arakwal Bundjalung woman. I grew up here on Country in Byron Bay and work within the Byron Shire.

My mother, Lynda Vidler is an Arakwal Elder who lodged Native Title in 2004 with her sisters and signed the Heads of Agreement with Byron Shire Council in 1998.
Everyone's voice is important. On council I want us to be inclusive, I want to facilitate open and culturally safe dialogue between the corporate functions of council and our Indigenous communities. Our visitor economy is crucial and my work as a long-term cultural educator can help make sure our values as a council align with all aspects of our important cultural and environmental values of Country for generations to come. Protecting our environment is a priority for me for the upcoming term of Council.
My background is in education, and I'm passionate about environmental and cultural education. Currently, I am the owner and operator of the Explore Byron Bay Aboriginal Tours and also work as an Aboriginal Student Support Officer at TAFE NSW. I am involved with annual community events such as; NAIDOC Week and Survival Day. Also important community-led rallies such as Black Lives Matter and School Strike for Climate Movement. I am also a member of the Sisters for Reconciliation Group.
As a traditional custodian, I feel I have a cultural duty to Country and community. I am passionate about our community and committed to serving our community on council.
