Sydney Eastern suburbs is one of the most expensive areas for child care in Australia and there is a desperate need for affordable long-day childcare in the area to support working families. Woollahra Council does not currently offer long-run day care for local families. Multiple local affordable child care centres in Paddington and Woollahra have closed, leaving local families desperate for such a service.

Greens Councillors have advocated strongly for the increase of pre-school places and the expansion of long-day child care services by Council at the Hugh Latimer Centre. Woollahra Council’s Hugh Latimer Centre is ideally suited to adding an affordable childcare centre in line with research that services that bring young and the elderly together benefit both groups. Affordable and accessible child care is a pressing social equity issue and Greens will continue to advocate for the implementation of these measures on Council.

The Greens have always advocated for public education. We will continue to advocate for the delivery of a public high school in the Woollahra LGA. We know we know we can deliver when we work with the community. Many moons ago, Matthew Robertson and the late Dr John Kaye began working with the CLOSE community group, which achieved the delivery of the vertical school at Cleveland St, Surry Hills.
