We believe that:

  • Major roads should have cycleways – whether in the form of bike lanes or bike paths (depending on road width and pathway availability). For the largest roads, the council will need to work with the state government to roll them out.
  • Cycling infrastructure should be safe and separate from pedestrians and drivers.
  • New cycleways need to be well-lit, well maintained and preferably tree lined.
  • We need improved connectivity between existing cycleways.
  • We need improved cycling access to town centres, as well as other key community institutions such as schools, libraries, swimming pools and public transport.
  • Workplaces should be encouraged to have showers available for cyclist employees.
  • We need to invest in bike racks for major shopping and employment precincts, as well as key community institutions.
  • Cyclists generally need to share residential roads with motor vehicles, but this can be made safer with ‘traffic calming infrastructure’ (speed bumps) which reduces vehicle speed.
  • We can improve cycle route wayfinding and line markings.
  • Council should run education campaigns to encourage Hills residents to take up cycling by espousing the health benefits of exercise, cost benefits, and cleaner air.
  • Council should consider the idea of a “bicycle mayor” This is a volunteer position liaising between cycling advocates and the council / government bodies. They listen to all groups and identify areas where positive change can be accelerated/ make sure infrastructure is practical, usable and safe.
