Jonathan Cassell

Councillor and Mayoral Candidate for Coffs Harbour

Having lived in the beautiful village of Emerald Beach since 2003, I love and appreciate Coffs Harbour’s unique coastal environment and its people. In this time, I have been an active member of the Emerald Beach community and helped lead in the protection of an important wetland from inappropriate development and the upgrade of critical road and footpath infrastructure.

As a current Councillor with the City of Coffs Harbour, I have a strong track record for delivering outcomes from driving climate leadership, endorsing a Great Koala National Park, fighting for a healthy drinking water catchment, pioneering a Shark Bite Emergency Response Program and taking action on Coffs Harbour’s beautification. I worked in collaboration with my fellow Councillors to protect the Jetty Foreshores from over-development.
My vision for Coffs Harbour is to ‘future-proof’ our community for the long term. As a coastal region, a hotter world needs to be front of mind as spelled out in Councils own 2023 Climate Change Risk Assessment report that ranked sea level impacts as high. As part of this vision, I am championing our region as the City of Parks and Gardens. The environmental and health benefits of a connected Parks and Gardens network across our region are broadly recognised from the cooling effects of shade to recreational activities. I imagine the Jetty Foreshores as the jewel in the crown and our central park for locals and visitors with exercise and modest tourism infrastructure.
I sit on 5 City committees as a councillor and I was appointed Chair of the Koala Plan of Management Committee, Cultural Advisory Committee and the Sustainability Advisory Committee. I enjoy my work as a Councillor and look forward to another term, hopefully, as your Mayor.
I am a strong local voice in Council who will deliver on financial and environmental sustainability outcomes.
