Michael Jacobs

Candidate for Maitland City Council - Ward 3

I first moved to Maitland in 1994 when we built our house in Metford and instantly fell in love with this fantastic city.

Our Community needs more engaged, more transparent governance, we need councilors who won't destroy our Walka Water Works Heritage but who will listen and act for the Maitland Community's future and find solutions that will both grow and protect our Heritage.
I recently became a grandfather and I recognise the need for more family friendly resources that young parents can draw upon and utilise. Maitland's population has grown significantly yet our infrastructure has not, there is a strong need for affordable and social housing across the whole of Maitland and an increase in activity and aquatic centres for all of Maitland to enjoy. I am a Metallurgical Engineer with a Masters degree in Business Administration with significant experience in business and project management. Maitland council need to create more incentives for businesses to "Move to Maitland" so that they can enjoy the opportunities of being in Maitland and create new opportunities of employment for the Maitland community.
If elected to Council, I will fight for more public and open space and the retention of native vegetation as habitat for our local endangered wildlife. Maitland has only 16% vegetation canopy cover which is very low for a rural region. It is important to protect what remains and ensure that our biodiversity corridors are maintained to also protect the 132 threatened species that also call Maitland home.
I understand the challenges that families and businesses are facing now and as a Councillor I would diligently work to ensure that Maitland's tomorrow is better than Maitland today.

    Tackling the Housing Crisis

The housing crisis is breaking people, and governments at all levels are tinkering around the edges instead of making the big changes we need to address housing affordability.
