Bayside needs a council-owned affordable housing corporation

In a wealthy country like Australia, no one should have to decide between paying rent and buying food or medicines.

Bayside council reports that 27% of Bayside residents are experiencing housing stress. This impacts on their ability to buy food and pay for utilities. To alleviate resident’s housing stress a projected 19,400 social and affordable dwellings are needed by 2041. Shared equity options should also be considered for people who are in housing stress but who do not qualify for either affordable or social housing. These would be people who have modest savings to contribute to the development of affordable housing, and in return they would have security that they will not need to move unless they want to. The shared equity housing council provides would be additional to the 19,500 social and affordable dwellings that are needed.

Dear Mayor,

27 % of Bayside residents are experiencing housing stress. This impacts on their ability to buy food and pay for utilities. Please set up an affordable housing corporation owned by Bayside Council, so council can help provide social, affordable, and shared equity housing.
