Louise Stokes

Candidate for Singleton Shire Council

Hello, I'm Louise. I've lived in Singleton Shire since 2012 and am working to have a healthy, clean and safe environment in which younger generations will thrive.

Singleton Council should be transparent and held accountable for the best use of public investment towards community resources and infrastructure that will be beneficial for all residents for decades to come. Locals, who live and spend their money in the Shire, should be central to the decision making that affects their everyday lives. For the sake of our children's physical and mental health, there needs to be significant investment and unwavering support for excellent air quality, affordable and safe housing for all residents, and systematic, well organised future proofing of agriculture and infrastructure to withstand extreme weather events.
I have taught in secondary schools throughout Australia for over 30 years. I've now settled into Singleton Shire with my husband and two teenage sons on the family farm at Jerry's Plains and teach at local High Schools in the Upper Hunter. I know my local community and am passionate about ensuring that our young people can thrive in a safe and healthy environment.
I am also passionate about equitable funding for public education, and access to theatre and the arts, especially in rural and regional communities.
As a Councilor, I will advocate for stronger regulation of air pollution in the region so that our houses, water tanks and air we breathe is not full of mine dust. I will also advocate for more investment in social and affordable housing access for local families and listen to the needs of the local community. The other key area is to prioritise investment in protecting local agriculture and developing public infrastructure to withstand the onslaught of future extreme weather events.
A vote for a Green representative on Singleton Council will give a focus to the long term changes we need to ensure an ongoing vibrant, healthy, fair and thriving rural community.
