Sarah O’Carrigan
Candidate for Blue Mountains - Ward 3
I was born and raised in Hazelbrook and have lived in Springwood for 10 years with my partner and two children. My children attend local public schools.
I work as an outdoors personal trainer running exercise classes with childcare provision for mothers and women in Glenbrook, Winmalee, and Hazelbrook.
This work means I am very familiar with council run fields and sporting facilities throughout the mountains. I operate my personal training business as a social enterprise, providing affordable childcare so that mums can exercise and access a supportive parenting community. Working outdoors, I'm acutely aware of the impacts of climate change and disasters on our local environment. As a core team member of Parents for Climate - Blue Mountains, I am focused on engaging as many parents as possible to fight for a safe climate future for our children.
I have extensive networks in Ward 3. I am a member of the Winmalee Hub Community Board, which focuses on solving various issues within our local community. I am also an active member of my local school community, volunteering weekly in the canteen at my daughter's school. In Australia, the childcare system is undervalued and under stress - this has been exacerbated by the post-pandemic recovery period. The pandemic showed that alternative work-family arrangements are possible. I will campaign for new ways of working that centre the needs of families especially primary carers, and their children. We are part of this change.
The environment is being degraded at an alarming rate. I want a planet that is liveable and sustainable for future generations. The Blue Mountains is the only Australian city that exists fully within a world heritage listed national park. Strong policies and clear targets are needed to protect the unceded lands we live on. I'm committed to amplifying Indigenous voices and decolonising systems that harm communities and the environment.
As a renter, I understand first hand what housing insecurity feels like. This is a political choice. I will advocate for fair and affordable housing in the Blue Mountains.
I advocate in strong support of the pro-Palestinian movement in the Blue Mountains. We need to stand together for humanity. None of us are free until all of us are.
