Councillor for Blue Mountains - Ward 1

Councillor Sarah Redshaw was elected to council in 2021. She has been part of the Blue Mountains community for nearly 30 years on the sovereign lands of the Darug and Gundungurra people.

In this short term of council I have presented Notices of Motion to council to increase waste recycling opportunities, extending library hours, an Urgency Motion for a crossing on Lurline St, Katoomba, environmental impacts of disposable nappies and some sanitary items and discouraging gas on new builds and demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. As well as putting a motion against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, I have attended various community events including pride flag raising for the LGBTQIA+ community and Tibetan flag raising in support of Tibet and the community here.

As a Greens councillor I have been involved in campaigns supporting Lithgow against a waste to energy incinerator, against tunnels to increase truck size and volume travelling through the Blue Mountains, against the Western Sydney airport and raising of the Warragamba Dam wall.

I have been a member of and regularly attend meetings of the Sports Council, the Premises Review Panel and occasionally the Heritage Advisory Committee and the Local Traffic Committee. I was also a member of the Revenue Task Force and the CEO performance review panel in 2022.

Continued focus and resolve is needed to minimise the impact on our world heritage area from climate change, indiscriminate development, increasing road transport and waste. We continue to advocate for increases in our use of renewable energy, freight on rail, recycling of waste, and measured development in working towards sustainability. At such a crucial time of change it is vital to build community strengths and connections.

I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to our local government and to work with others towards increasing community sustainability and resilience. How we interact and live within our environment is vital. There are real opportunities to work constructively with council on existing initiatives and to develop positive responses to future challenges.

I am committed to working with the Blue Mountains Greens as well as the Blue Mountains community in building a sustainable future.
