Virginia Gawler

Candidate for Wagga City Council

I am running as a Greens candidate for the Wagga Wagga City Council election because I believe in the concept of 'thinking globally and acting locally'.

I am also committed to the four core principles of The Greens: Ecological sustainability and care for the earth; grassroots participatory democracy; social and economic justice and peace and non-violence.
My family and I moved from Sydney to Wagga in 2006 and our youngest child was raised and educated in Wagga. I have been an active member of the Riverina Greens since 2006 and been involved in a number of community movements including rallies for climate justice and supporting the 'Yes' campaign for the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum.
I am particularly passionate about housing justice and increasing homelessness in Wagga. I organised a community rally in Wagga last December around the theme of 'Housing is a Human Right'. Amid an acute cost of living crisis, people with jobs including families are living in their cars or in tents because of the desperate shortage of affordable rental accommodation and lack of public housing in Wagga.
I believe local government has a crucial role to play in alleviating this crisis in Wagga and elsewhere.

    Tackling the Housing Crisis

The housing crisis is breaking people, and governments at all levels are tinkering around the edges instead of making the big changes we need to address housing affordability.
