Abrar Ahmad

Candidate for Canterbury-Bankstown Council - Bankstown Ward

Vote for The Greens in Canterbury Bankstown Council for increased green spaces, increased investment for youth infrastructure, sustainable community lead development and solidarity with Palestinian people.

The current Canterbury Bankstown Council has lost touch with local residents. They do not have the best interest of the community rather they are too dependent on property developers and big business. For too long, the needs of the local community have been ignored.
My name is Abrar Ahmad and I am your Greens candidate for Bankstown(Darani) ward in the upcoming local council elections. I am a community development and youth worker, I have worked for youth, refugee and local community organisations for over 8 years.
I decided to run in the local government elections because I have strong roots in the Canterbury Bankstown local government area. I have lived here for over 15 years. I went to Western Sydney University and I have immediate family who live in Bankstown. My dad was a Psychiatrist in Bankstown Hospital for 10 years and my mother is a early childhood educator in Bankstown.
I believe there needs to be an increased investment in the infrastructure for young people. Canterbury Bankstown has a large proportion of young people and they require an indoor multipurpose youth centre, currently the major point of attraction for young people is the Bankstown Shopping Centre.
Bankstown is also on the cusp of increased rapid development, with the construction of the Bankstown- Sydenham metro and the rezoning of many areas along the metro line. I believe development should be in the interest of residents and the community and not just property developers. With increased residential development in Canterbury Bankstown, Council facilities need to reflect on the needs of the community. My priority is ensure there is adequate green spaces for residents. Local families need access to safe and sustainable parks and playgrounds. We have many parks in the LGA that require council investment, whether it be providing shelter from the sun or updating playground equipment.
A vote for the Greens on Council means real change for the local area. Greens Councillors will fight for local residents and work diligently so Canterbury Bankstown is a safe, sustainable and vibrant community.

    Tackling the Housing Crisis

The housing crisis is breaking people, and governments at all levels are tinkering around the edges instead of making the big changes we need to address housing affordability.
