David Mallard

Councillor for Orange City Council

Hi, I'm David. I've lived in Orange since 2009 and I'm passionate about ensuring we have a sustainable, inclusive and vibrant future for our city and its surrounds.

The next four years will be a critical period for Orange and the region as we face the ongoing challenges caused by cost of living and housing affordability pressures, as well as the need to move our households and businesses away from using polluting energy sources like coal and gas, and on to cheaper, clean energy sources for our shared future.
On top of those challenges, our growing and changing community will need to plan for the increasing living and care needs of our seniors, as well as more services for young families. Plus council needs to ensure the long-term provision of green spaces, footpaths, cycleways, cultural and sporting facilities, and access to all the existing services that make Orange such a wonderful place to live.
I've worked as a lecturer educating local students at Charles Sturt University, as an adviser providing policy and campaign advice to a member of the New South Wales Parliament, and in community engagement with a local mental health service. These days I work as a union organiser, and since 2021 I've been your Greens Councillor for Orange.
In the past few years I've worked on Council and with our local community to drive action on the key challenges facing us. Through this work, we've seen Council step up and take action on the housing affordability crisis, play a leadership role in challenging harmful attitudes and behaviours to prevent gender-based violence, and provide more support for some of the most vulnerable groups within our community. And we've seen Council take action to protect precious trees and wildlife habitat and continue working to reduce energy costs and climate pollution by making the switch to clean energy from the sun and wind.
We've had 20 years of Greens representation on Orange City Council and our city is the better for it. We've worked successfully with the council and community groups to deliver improvements and protect important services in our region, from innovative water security solutions, to saving local parks, to making the CBD more vibrant and the city more liveable and sustainable.

    Tackling the Housing Crisis

The housing crisis is breaking people, and governments at all levels are tinkering around the edges instead of making the big changes we need to address housing affordability.
