James Ansell

Candidate for Queanbeyan-Palerang

James moved to Queanbeyan in 2021 after living in Canberra for a decade. He is running for QPRC as he wants a more engaged and progressive Council that supports the community living in the region.

Local Councils have a large impact on the local community and I believe a progressive Green voice is needed to ensure Council is best helping people solve the issues we are all facing.
Since the 2021 QPRC election Katrina has been a fantastic advocate for the community but it's a huge workload for one person. So we have a massive opportunity to get more Greens onto Council this election to build on those wins with a larger team.
I moved to Queanbeyan in 2021 after living in Canberra for a decade. I work for a non-profit health organisation pushing for improved consumer rights and used to be a casual employee at the ANU.
I'm active in two unions (the NTEU and ASU), run a sole-trader business and am studying part-time for an MBA. (I'm also a one-eyed supporter of the GWS Giants, an obsessed fan of the TV show Survivor and used to fly Hot Air Balloons).
On QPRC the Greens will push to address the two biggest issues facing the community right now: cost of living, climate change and disengagement. On cost of living I am particularly interested on addressing housing issues by increasing the amount of ""Affordable Housing"" being developed and built (without negatively impacting the environment we live in). On climate change I will push for projects that reduce the carbon emissions of both Council itself but also the wider community e.g. increasing solar and batteries, encouraging EV usage. On disengagement, I want to see Council (and Councillors) to be more present in the wider community to hear what the issues are that people need addressed across the region.
